My Passion, My Purpose.
Teaching children to think about the future is my way of making a difference.
As a business and career education teacher at a middle school and founder of MyTeenBiz.com, I not only teach young teens how to succeed in business, but also how to succeed in life.
After seeing firsthand how many students lack basic financial, business and career knowledge and skills necessary to pursue successful futures, I was motivated to create a site that brings business and finance education right to your fingertips. This is NOT a subject that anyone can afford to fail.
Serious research is being published on the subject. The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy evaluates the financial literacy of young adults issues yearly issues detailed reports. In 1997, the average financial literacy score was 57.3% — a failing grade, but that’s the best it has ever been, and it has fallen consistently ever since. By 2009, the average financial literacy score plunged to 48.3%. That’s a 9.0% drop over 11 years. The Jumpstart Coalition says that today 75% of young Americans are likely to lack the skills needed to make smart financial decisions. In their study, they found that financial literacy for high school students was only 48.3%, while the average score for college students on the same 31-question exam shot up to 62.2%. As you can see, these reports are alarming!
Young people like to spend money, but they just don’t know how money works. This is scary. Instead of becoming discouraged, I recognized that an opportunity exists to deliver this important information to teens that are eager to learn more about how to manage and handle their money and their businesses. At this point, any action aimed at spreading awareness for business and financial literacy would be a HUGE step in the right direction.
My students inspired me daily to launch this site as I constantly found myself searching for interactive web tools to make learning fun and exciting. I enjoy working with teachers all over the country and inspiring students to become future business leaders. My students have been and continue to be my teachers. They have taught, inspired and continually challenged me to grow as a teacher.
My purpose is to empower and educate the future generation of entrepreneurs. Everyone has a talent. Together, we will tap into that God given talent of yours. We are all blessed with special gifts and abilities, but unfortunately not everyone has the courage, the drive, determination and discipline to use them to their full potential. You do!
I truly appreciate the support I have received from other educators, parents and most of all my students as I do my best to educate and empower our youth. This support enables me to impact thousands of kids, teens and young adults each year.
Thank you for supporting business and finance education!
Get Inspired,
-S. Martinez
